United Way of the Black Hills Welcomes New Mental Health Initiative Director

We welcome our new Mental Health Initiative director, Murray Lee, to our United Way team!

Murray comes to us as the former Director of Alumni Foundations & Services at National American University. He has extensive experience in the nonprofit sector, through developing and maintaining relationships with donors, stakeholders, grantees and organizations; grant writing administration; program development; and has comprehensive knowledge of Native American history with emphasis on the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota speaking people.

“I was drawn to this position, because I care about people and have seen the effects that mental and behavioral health issues, as well as substance use disorders, can have on individuals, their families, and the communities they call home,” says Murray.

Murray's goals in this position is to connect with key leaders and stakeholders in behavioral health treatment and services in the Black Hills to learn more about how they currently serve those affected by mental and behavioral health issues. He hopes to implement new ideas to improve awareness and services.

“It’s my vision to see that all people experiencing mental and behavioral health issues receive quality care with dignity,” says Murray.

Outside of work, Murray enjoys exploring the Black Hills with his wife, Linda. Please join us in giving Murray a warm welcome!

In January 2020, United Way of the Black Hills launched a new Mental Health Initiative within the health pillar. The development of this new position came about following UWBH's 2019 Community Needs Assessment, that indicated that the #1 pressing need in the Black Hills was access and affordability of mental health services. The goal of the Mental Health Initiative Director is to collaborate with a variety of Black Hills leaders, and existing mental health services and programs to explore gaps and develop new programs to serve those in need.
